What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is a vital sign that measures the force of blood against the walls of arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. It is expressed in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers, systolic pressure (top number) and diastolic pressure (bottom number).

A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg. However, if either or both numbers are consistently higher, it could be an indicator of high blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension is a silent killer and increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

To monitor blood pressure, one can use a home blood pressure monitor or have it checked by a healthcare provider. It is important to measure blood pressure at different times of the day and under different circumstances, such as after physical activity, to get an accurate reading.

To manage high blood pressure, lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular physical activity, stress management and avoiding tobacco use can be effective. In addition, medications prescribed by a healthcare provider may be necessary to control blood pressure.

It is important to regularly check and monitor blood pressure, and to work with a healthcare provider to manage it, in order to reduce the risk of health problems associated with high blood pressure.
